Translation: Turn Off
जबसे बुलबुल तूने दो तिनके लिये
टूटती हैं बिजलियाँ इनके लिये
jabse bulbul toone do tinke liye
tootati hain bijliyaan inke liye
Since (the time) you gathered a few straws, O bulbul
For (/On) them, lightning strikes have become occurent
–
है जवानी ख़ुद जवानी का सिंगार
सादगी गहना है इस सिन के लिये
hai javaani khud javaani ka singaar
saadagi gehna hai is sin ke liye
Youthfulness is itself the adornment of youth
Simplicity is for this age the best ornament
–
कौन वीराने में देखेगा बहार
फूल जंगल में खिले किनके लिये
kaun veerane mein dekhega bahaar
phool jangal mein khile kinke liye
For whom (to see) have flowers bloomed in the jungle?
To whom in the wilderness will this spring be evident?

सारी दुनिया के हैं वो मेरे सिवा
मैंने दुनिया छोड़ दी जिनके लिये
saari duniya ke hain vo mere siva
mainne duniya chhod di jinke liye
They are of the whole world but not mine
They, for whom the entire world I forewent
–
बाग़बाँ कलियाँ हों हल्के रंग की
भेजनी हैं एक कमसिन के लिये
baaghabaan kaliyaan hon halke rang ki
bhejni hain ek kamsin ke liye
O gardener, hand me buds and of light color
To someone coming of age these are to be sent
–
सब हसीं हैं ज़ाहिदों को नापसंद
अब कोई हूर आएगी इनके लिये
sab haseen hain zaahidon ko naapasand
ab koi hoor aayegi inke liye
These recluses disapprove of all beauties (of this world)
(As if) A houri will now descend for their beguilement!

वस्ल का दिन और इतना मुख़्तसर
दिन गिने जाते थे इस दिन के लिये
vasl ka din aur itna mukhtasar
din gine jaate the is din ke liye
Finally, the day of our meeting, alas! so fleeting
So many days I had counted for this day’s advent
–
सुब्ह का सोना जो हाथ आता ‘अमीर’
भेजते तोहफ़ा मुअज़्ज़िन के लिये
subh ka sona jo haath aata ‘Ameer’
bhejte tohfa mu’azzin ke liye
Had I ever got hold of some early morning sleep ‘Ameer’
To the prayer-caller I would’ve sent (it as) a present
