आपकी याद आती रही रातभर*
चाँदनी दिल दुखाती रही रातभर

aapki yaad aati rahi raatbhar*
chaandni dil dukhaati rahi raatbhar

Memories of you kept recurring, all through the night
Moonlight tormented my heart, all through the night

–

गाह जलती हुई गाह बुझती हुई
शम्म-ए-ग़म झिलमिलाती रही रातभर

gah jalti hui gah bujhti hui
shamm-e-gham jhilmilaati rahi raatbhar

Bright and dim, intense and mild, capriciously
The flame of affliction flickered on, all through the night

कोई ख़ुशबू बदलती रही पैरहन
कोई तस्वीर गाती रही रातभर

koyi khushbu badalti rahi pairahan
koyi tasveer gaati rahi raatbhar

A fragrance kept transforming as it wafted around
An image kept singing to me, all through the night

–

फिर सबा साया-ए-शाख़-ए-गुल के तले
कोई क़िस्सा सुनाती रही रातभर

phir saba saaya-e-shaakh-e-gul ke tale
koi qissa sunaati rahi raatbhar

Once again, a zephyr whispered beneath the flowering branches
And narrated a tale, all through the night

जो न आया उसे कोई ज़ंजीर-ए-दर
हर सदा पर बुलाती रही रातभर

jo na aaya use koyi zanjeer-e-dar
har sada par bulaati rahi raatbhar

The chain on the door, with every clink, called out
To the one who never arrived, all through the night

एक उम्मीद से दिल बहलता रहा
एक तमन्ना सताती रही रातभर

ek ummeed se dil bahalta raha
ek tamanna sataati rahi raatbhar

The heart held on to that one hope, yet
The yearning anguished me, all through the night
