Translation: Turn Off

हर कोई दिल की हथेली पे है सहरा रक्खे
किसको सैराब करे वो किसे प्यासा रक्खे

har koyi dil ki hatheli pe hai sahra rakkhe
kisko sairaab kare vo kise pyaasa rakkhe

Everyone holds in the heart a desert waiting for rain
Whom do they* douse then, whom do they* not imbue

–

उम्रभर कौन निभाता है तअल्लुक़ इतना
ऐ मेरी जान के दुश्मन तुझे अल्लाह रक्खे

umrbhar kaun nibhaata hai ta’alluq itna
ae meri jaan ke dushman tujhe allah rakkhe

Who (else but you) would maintain a life-long bond (with me) like this
O my mortal enemy! may you have a long life, may God protect you

–

हमको अच्छा नहीं लगता कोई हमनाम तेरा
कोई तुझसा हो, तो फिर नाम भी तुझसा रक्खे

humko achchha naheen lagta koyi ham’naam tera
koi tujhsa ho to phir naam bhi tujhsa rakkhe

I do not like any namesake of yours, for
If they can’t be like you, then having the same name is undue

–

दिल भी पागल है कि उस शख़्स से वाबस्ता है
जो किसी और का होने दे ना अपना रक्खे

dil bhi paagal hai ki us shakhs se vaabasta hai
jo kisi aur ka hone de na apna rakkhe

How foolish is my heart to be involved with that person
Who neither does hold me dear nor lets anyone else do

कम नहीं तमा-ए-इबादत भी तो हिर्स-ए-ज़र से
फ़क़्र तो वो है कि जो दीन ना दुनिया रक्खे

kam naheen tama-e-ibaadat bhi to hirs-e-zar se
faqr to vo hai ki jo din na duniya rakkhe

Devouring (/excessive) devoutness is no better than greed of gold
(True) Asceticism is that which does both faith and wordly things eschew

–

हँस ना इतना भी फ़क़ीरों के अकेलेपन पर
जा, ख़ुदा मेरी तरह तुझको भी तन्हा रक्खे

hans na itna bhi faqeeron ke akelepan par
ja, khuda meri tarah tujhko bhi tanha rakkhe

Mock not the solitary way of life of the faqirs
Like me, may God make you lonely too

ये क़नाअत है, इताअत है, कि चाहत है ‘फ़राज़’
हम तो राज़ी हैं वो जिस हाल में जैसा रक्खे

ye qanaa’at hai itaa’at hai ki chaahat hai ‘Faraz’
hum to raazi hain vo jis haal mein jaisa rakkhe

Is this your contentment, or submissiveness, or is it love ‘Faraz’
You are acquiescent, however (badly) they* treat you

ae meri jaan ke dushman tujhe allah rakkhe

–

हमको अच्छा नहीं लगता कोई हमनाम तेरा
कोई तुझसा हो, तो फिर नाम भी तुझसा रक्खे

humko achchha naheen lagta koyi ham’naam tera
koi tujhsa ho to phir naam bhi tujhsa rakkhe

दिल भी पागल है कि उस शख़्स से वाबस्ता है
जो किसी और का होने दे ना अपना रक्खे

dil bhi paagal hai ki us shakhs se vaabasta hai
jo kisi aur ka hone de na apna rakkhe

कम नहीं तमा-ए-इबादत भी तो हिर्स-ए-ज़र से

Translation: Turn Off

उसने सुकूत-ए-शब में भी अपना पयाम रख दिया
हिज्र की रात बाम पर माह-ए-तमाम रख दिया

usne sukoot-e-shab mein bhi apna payaam rakh diya
hijr ki raat baam par maah-e-tamam rakh diya

In the stillness of night they’ve sent a message and how
They’ve adorned this night of separation with the full moon now

–

आमद-ए-दोस्त की नवेद कू-ए-वफ़ा में गर्म थी
मैंने भी एक चराग़-सा दिल सर-ए-शाम रख दिया

aamad-e-dost ki naved ku-e-vafa mein garm thi
mainne bhi ek charaagh-sa dil sar-e-shaam rakh diya

There are glad tidings, my beloved’s visit is imminent
As the evening falls, my heart glows like a lamp now

–

शिद्दत-ए-तिश्नगी में भी ग़ैरत-ए-मैकशी रही
उसने जो फेर ली नज़र मैंने भी जाम रख दिया

shiddat-e-tishnagi mein bhi ghairat-e-maikashi rahi
usne jo pher li nazar mainne bhi jaam rakh diya

My thirst may be severe but my honor is unshakeable
Now that they disregard me, I lay down my goblet now

–

उसने नज़र-नज़र में ही ऐसे भले सुख़न कहे
मैंने तो उसके पाँव में सारा कलाम रख दिया

usne nazar-nazar mein hi aise bhale sukhan kahe
mainne to uske paanv mein saara kalaam rakh diya

In a few glances, they recited such wonderful verses
That I have offered up all my poetry at their feet now

–

देखो ये मेरे ख़्वाब थे देखो ये मेरे ज़ख़्म हैं
मैं ने तो सब हिसाब-ए-जाँ बर सर-ए-आम रख दिया

dekho ye mere khvaab the dekho ye mere zakhm hain
mainne to sab hisaab-e-jaan bar sar-e-aam rakh diya

These were my (unfulfilled) dreams, these are my wounds
Look, I have laid bare the full account of my life now

–

और ‘फ़राज़’ चाहिए कितनी मोहब्बतें तुझे
माँओं ने तेरे नाम पर बच्चों का नाम रख दिया

aur ‘Faraz’ chaahiye kitni mohabbatein tujhe
maaon ne tere naam par bachchon ka naam rakh diya

‘Faraz’, what more admiration and esteem can you ask for
Mothers have named sons after you, take a bow

Translation: Turn Off

फिर इसी राहगुज़र पर शायद
हम कभी मिल सकें मगर शायद

phir isi raahguzar par shaayad
hum kabhi mil saken magar shaayad

Here on this pathway yet again, perhaps
I hope we meet once again, perhaps

–

जिनके हम मुंतज़िर रहे उनको
मिल गए और हमसफ़र शायद

jinke hum muntazir rahe unko
mil gaye aur humsafar shaayad

They who I have been long waiting for
Have traveled away with other companions, perhaps

–

जान-पहचान से भी क्या होगा
फिर भी ऐ दोस्त ग़ौर कर शायद

jaan-pehchaan se bhi kya hoga
phir bhi ae dost gaur kar shaayad

What good might come of a mere acquaintance
Yet it might not be all in vain, perhaps

–

अजनबीयत की धुंध छट जाए
चमक उठे तेरी नजर शायद

ajnabiyat ki dhundh chhat jaaye
chamak utthe teri nazar shaayad

The fog of unfamiliarity will fade away I hope
Your eyes will light up seeing me again, perhaps

–

जो भी बिछड़े वो कब मिले हैं ‘फ़राज़’
फिर भी तू इंतज़ार कर शायद

jo bhi bichhde vo kab mile hain ‘Faraz’
phir bhi tu intezar kar shaayad

Have the parted ones ever come back, ‘Faraz’
But why not await their return, perhaps
